Lake Coeur d'Alene Bald Eagle Watch

I thought I would share with you one of our favorite free winter activities. Right now you can view Bald Eagles on Lake Coeur d'Alene. There are even 2 interpretive centers set up with spotting scopes and biologists to help you learn about the eagles. The interpretive centers will be there until January 1st.

John and I took a drive out to Lake Coeur d'Alene today to see the Bald Eagles. We have gone a couple of times in the past and every time we have a ton of fun. I love that it is completely free to go and watch these amazing birds right near you. I think this would be a great activity to take kids out to. They can look at the Bald Eagles through the spotting scopes the biologists have set up. They can also see a couple of stuffed birds up close to get an idea of how big they really are. The volunteers are excited to tell you about the Bald Eagles and make sure that you get to see them. While we were standing there today one swooped down right near us and plucked a salmon out of the water. I can't tell you how much I love watching these amazing birds up close without having to pay to take a tour or get a guide.

With help from the Forest Service, Idaho Fish and Game, Audubon Society, and volunteers, the Bureau of Land Management will again host the annual Coeur d’Alene Eagle Watch Week from December 26 through January 1, 2011. Join us at the Mineral Ridge Boat Launch and Mineral Ridge Trailhead, located in Wolf Lodge Bay on Coeur d’Alene Lake, to learn about and observe the bald eagles feeding on the spawned Kokanee salmon. Educational displays and telescopes will be set up for the viewing public to enjoy the eagles.
